About Artist Richard Smith, BFA

Richard was interested in art from an early age. Like many children, he enjoyed painting happy paintings.

After graduating from high school, he went to Malaspina College to study art for a year. He then attended the University of Victoria, majoring in sculpture, and received his Bachelor of Fine Art in 1976.

An interest in photography lead him to subsequently study broadcast journalism at BCIT, where he was trained as a news photographer. He received a technical diploma from BCIT in 1979.

After several years working in television and advertising, Richard was given a chance to work in a sculpture studio in Victoria in 1993. Before too long, he decided to pursue his own independent work, focusing on making abstract metal sculpture.

Richard has participated in several art shows, including:

  • Gorge on Art (participated nearly every year since its inception)

  • Saanich Scattered Artists Tour

  • Moss St. Paint-In

  • Saanich Municipal Hall

  • Arts Centre at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre

  • Esquimalt Arts Festival

  • ArtsAlive Oak Bay

  • Sculpture Splash at Macaulay Point

  • Sidney Sculpture Walk

  • Victoria Art Gallery Winter and Summer Works shows

  • Sooke Fine Arts Show (he has shown three times at the hugely popular annual juried show).

Currently, Richard is taking a break from sculpture and working on painting. In 2021, he worked on landscapes and realism pieces. In 2022, he is focusing on acrylic on panel abstracts.
